Τhe motor vehicles, trailers, construction machinery/vehicles, whose size or weight or load or axle load are in excess of the limits set out by the law (e.g. height >4.0m, width > 2.55m etc.) are characterized as Overweight/Oversized Vehicles.

A special permit (Article 53, Greek Traffic Code) is required to be issued by “Egnatia Odos S.A.” for such vehicles in order to use the motorway sections managed by the company (Egnatia Motorway mainline, 3 basic Egnatia Vertical Axes etc) marked in green on the side map.

During the transit of the above vehicles, the carrier must ensure that they are accompanied by special escort car(s) equipped with warning devices in accordance with Law 2518/1997.
(“Egnatia Odos S.A.” does not issue permits for travelling on the Egnatia motorway service road network. For those sections, road users should contact the competent State Bodies of each area.)

Indicatively, the following table presents the maximum vehicle/load width that potentially (and always after the issuance of the special permit indicated above) can travel (or be transported) along Egnatia Motorway distinctive sections:

With regard to the height restrictions, the vehicles/loads with a maximum overall height less than 4.70m potentially (and always after the issuance of the special permit) can travel on all motorway sections which are under the jurisdiction of “EGNATIA ODOS S.A.”.

NOTE 1

The permits issued for vehicles/loads that need to travel along long tunnel road sections and have an overall weight greater than 80tn, will be valid ONLY FOR ONE (1) DAY and will always be issued one working day before the transportation date.

During the transit a) of the above overweight vehicles or/and b) vehicles travelling with speed less than 50km/hr, the carrier must ensure that they are accompanied by at least two special escort cars equipped with warning devices in accordance with Law 2518/1997. The 1st escort car will be following at a distance of approx. 50m and the 2nd escort car will be following at a distance of approx. 400m.

On the date of the transportation, and specifically when the vehicle approaches a road section with long tunnels, driver/accompanying persons should call 1077 (motorway emergency number), in order to inform the corresponding Traffic Control Centre accordingly.

NOTE 2

In cases where “Egnatia Odos S.A.” and the Traffic Police jointly decide that, during the transportation of the “special” vehicle, there needs to be a full or partial (only for heavy vehicles) traffic closure on a specific road section, the applicant must also submit to “Egnatia Odos S.A.” a special traffic diversion signage study for a partial or full (depending on the specific circumstances) traffic closure on the specific road section, which will be prepared under the applicant’s responsibility.

After the study is approved by “Egnatia Odos S.A.”, it must be forwarded to the local competent police department, which then proceeds to issue a relevant traffic closure police decision.

The applicant is also responsible and covers the cost for the provision and implementation on site, on the specific day of travel, of the special workzone signage determined in the study.
